Moth Survey Volunteer (Mersey Gateway (Runcorn area))
11 months
Macro - moths are excellent indicators of woodland health! Due to their short gestation times they respond rapidly to habitat change. Certain moth species are also associated with certain habitats, allowing for targeted surveying for their presence. Some of these species are rare and even listed as UK Biodiversity Action Plan Priority species, making their conservation especially important.
Our project will target on moth species in wet willow habitat, such as Goat Moth and Hornet Clearwing Moth. By joining our surveys, you’ll help us establish a baseline understanding of moth species’ presence and abundance within our project woodlands. The surveys will also provide deeper insights into the populations of specialist moths and their conservation needs.
We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support this meaningful citizen science project. While some knowledge of moths is helpful, it’s by no means essential—we welcome anyone with a curiosity about moths and a willingness to learn. What matters most is your enthusiasm and a flexible approach to timing, as the surveys are weather-dependent and usually take place on Friday or Saturday nights.
Following training the role will involve joining an expert moth recorder at either Wigg Island (WA7 1LU) or Oxmoor Wood (WA7 1RS). Moth traps would be set just before sunset, then you would remain on site for 2/3 hours to conduct the recording and release the moths. It’s a unique opportunity to witness nature at quieter, often magical hours of the day, and to contribute to important biodiversity data collection.
Apply today to become part of this exciting citizen science project!
If you're selected you would need to be available to attend the indoor training workshop will take place at the Crow Wood Park (WA8 3LL) , from 5pm to 7pm on Saturday 26th April 2025. Weather permitting, the group will have the opportunity to head out to the site to set a moth trap and record moths, continuing activities until around 10pm.
