Practical Conservation Volunteer (Darwen Moor)
4 months
Darwen moor is currently undergoing peatland restoration to reduce the risk of wildfire and flooding to the local areas and restore priority habitat for the many birds, insects and plant species that rely on this habitat. The work involves blocking drainage, repairing slopes and reintroducing the important plant species including sphagnum moss. Sphagnum moss is the driving force in carbon storage, water storage, flood mitigation and fire risk reduction in blanket bog peatlands and is vital to any successful restoration project.
We are looking for volunteers to assist with planting sphagnum moss across Darwen Moor to protect the peat and restore function to the bog. The sphagnum needs to be planted in designated areas across the site where conditions are suitable for it to spread, covering any bare peat and restart the peat accumulation process.
This will take place at week day work parties between late November and the end of March.
